EDISON, NJ - State Senator Patrick Diegnan and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak committed to combating gender pay inequities in the workplace by supporting legislation and overturning Governor Christie's veto of previous measures.
"When all working people know their state is invested in their success, we are all better off. With hard work, everyone should realize the reach of their dreams and know no limits but the scope of their aspirations" said Senator Diegnan (D-Middlesex). "These legislative measures will help us monitor discriminatory pay practices so we can end these workplace abuses and ensure a more equitable workplace in New Jersey." The legislators, who are candidates for re-election this November have made equal pay a major theme of their joint campaign. Their support of current legislation would modify current law, including the Law Against Discrimination (LAD), to strengthen protections against employment discrimination and promote equal pay for women. "Women in nearly every occupation experience the pay gap when they should be paid commensurate to their qualifications," said Assemblyman Karabinchak (D-Middlesex). "We will not stop fighting to close the wage gap until a dollar equals a dollar, regardless of a person's gender and we will hold the Governor accountable for his inaction which holds working families back in so many ways." Specifically, Senator Diegnan and Assemblyman Karabinchak would amend the LAD to make it an unlawful practice for an employer to discriminate between employees on the basis of sex by paying a rate of compensation, including benefits, to employees of one sex that is less than the rate paid to employees of the other sex for substantially similar work, when viewed as a composite of skill, effort and responsibility. The legislators also want to prohibit an employer from taking reprisals against an employee for disclosing information about job titles, occupational categories, rates of compensation, gender, race, ethnicity, military status, or national origin of employees or former employees. It also prohibits an employer from requiring any employee or prospective employee to waive their rights under the law as a condition of employment. EDISON, NJ - On the morning of Saturday, September 17th, Senator Patrick Diegnan and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak hosted a Campaign Headquarters Kickoff. The biggest theme of the morning was how the local races in many towns created a foundation for elections going on in the 18th District, the congressional races in Middlesex County and even for the national ticket.
Speakers included Middlesex County Democratic Chairman Kevin McCabe, 6th Congressional District Representative Frank Pallone, Freeholder Kenneth Armwood, Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey and a surrogate from the Clinton-Kaine campaign. "This really goes to show how important our race is this year," said Diegnan (D-Middlesex) "We are the only contested race for the State Legislature this year, so the eyes of New Jersey are on us and I think that showed today. At one point, we had a count of 70 people packing the room. There was a real excitement about our race and I'm proud to know that our accomplishments have been able to inspire so many of our friends." "Looking around that room I saw many friends and colleagues," said Karabinchak (D-Middlesex). "But I also saw a lot faces that I didn't recognize, and many of them were younger. Its really heartening to see that our message has reached the younger generations enough for them to come out and see what we're all about. And with local races in all seven towns of the 18th District, we're working hard to build a strong foundation that can help our friends up and down the ticket." The event was attended by a host of officials from across the county and from across the state. Other officials and candidates spotted in attendance were Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin, Sheriff Mildred Scott, the entire Edison Township Council, Metuchen Councilwoman Dorothy Rasmussen, Highland Park Councilwoman Elsie Foster Dublin, and East Brunswick candidates Brad Cohen, Michael Spadafino, and Sterley Stanley. Senator Patrick Diegnan and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak represent East Brunswick, Edison, Helmetta, Highland Park, Metuchen, South Plainfield and South River in Trenton.
